DIY Decorated Clothes Hanger

Hey guys! Today I'm super excited to share a DIY project with you for a decorated clothes hanger! This project was actually not on my radar until late last week when I got a super exciting email from the folks at Buzzfeed asking me to come up with a DIY for a pretty decorated clothes hanger for an upcoming post! Guys, my brain kind of exploded, I was so excited!

When I was approached about this project, I had honestly never thought about decorating my hangers before. But why not??? I love clothes, I love organizing, I love all sorts of pretty little things, so decorating clothes hangers is actually a great project. Immediately, my brain started swimming with ideas. I thought about doing some string art in the middle section, covering the hanger with fabric, painting a fun pattern on it, or maybe insetting fabric into the middle section. Then it hit me: why not decorate the hanger bar with embroidery floss? Yea, that's right, I went all friendship bracelet style on this hanger!

This project is super simple to do, but does take some time, so it's a perfect project to do while you're watching a good movie or having a relaxing day at home.

If you want to make one yourself, you'll just need some simple supplies: a hanger with a bar (preferably a wooden one), four colors of embroidery floss or thin yarn, and scissors.

1. Cut a piece of embroidery floss about 36” long, and then cut a piece of each of the remaining colors of embroidery floss to the same length.

2. Tie the bundle of embroidery floss around the bottom rung of the hanger and knot it in place. Be sure to leave about 1” of embroidery floss at the end of the knot so you’ll be able to hide the ends.

3.  Select your first color of embroidery floss. With the bar of the hanger vertical and the hook of the hanger to your right, hold the remaining pieces of embroidery floss and the ends from the knot flush with the hanger bar. Then, take the selected piece of embroidery floss, bring it to the left, and then over the hanger bar, forming what looks like a “4”. Next, bring the end of the embroidery floss around the back of the hanger, and through the “4” shape. Pull tight to make your first knot.

4.  Continue step 3 with your first color until you have a section of color the length of your liking. When you are ready to switch to the next color, simply bring the color you were working with back to flush with the hanger bar, select the next color of embroidery floss, and repeat step 3 with that color. Continue these steps, alternating colors to your liking, until you reach the end of the hanger bar.

5.  As you work, you will need to add additional lengths of embroidery floss to the existing ones so you can continue with your work. To do so, simply cut another 36” of that color and tie the new length of embroidery floss to the older one, and then trim the ends to about 1/2". Be sure to think ahead, so you can hide the knot under the other colors of embroidery floss as you work.

6. When you reach the end of the hanger bar, tie a tight knot around it, and trim the ends.

Voila! You're done! Now you have a beautiful hanger to hang your lovely clothes on!

Weekly Wishlist- Beautiful Browns

Alright, buddies, it's September! I don't care if it's still 80° out, I want fall clothes. Like, all of them.

This week when I was doing some online window shopping, I was positively drooling over all the beautiful, rich browns I was seeing everywhere. I decided that I wanted to put together a dreamy outfit full of gorgeous brown hues for this week's wishlist.

Now, technically these tights from ModCloth are grey, but they're a warm grey, so I'm putting them on the brown team! I think they'd look great with pretty much any color you could think of, so I'd love to add these to my wardrobe.

I'm also head over heels (ha!) for these mary janes from Lotta from Stockholm. The heel is a little higher that I usually spring for, but I've heard nothing but good things about the comfort of these guys. I actually love these so much that I mayyyyyyy have ordered them prior to posting this wishlist!

As you may have noticed, I wear stripes all the damn time. I love that this pretty printed dress would get me away from stripes and into plaid, which is another one of my favorite prints. The color combination, fit, and styling of this dress are to die for. All it needs are couple of cute accessories!

Now, this belt from Anthropologie could be a bit overkill with the dress, but I love mixing prints, so I'd certainly give it a try! I love the way the different colors are woven together to make such a pretty piece. I also really love this adorable watch necklace from ModCloth and think it would look darling with just about everything. I think it's subtle, but just interesting enough to work really well with the plaid dress.

Weekend Wardrobe

Hey guys! I hope you all got to have a nice long weekend! I was actually on staycation all last week, which was pretty great. As nice as it was to be off last week, though, I did have some sad times. One of my dearest friends flew out of Seattle on Sunday to begin a new adventure in a new city. I am so incredibly excited for her, but my heart is a little heavy knowing that I won't get to see her on a weekly basis anymore. It's always hard when friends move away.

Heavy heart aside, it was a very nice weekend! Apart from helping with moving preparations, I had a fun mini-slumber party at my house, put some new shelves up in the living room with a lot of help from my dad, and worked on a fun project that I'm excited to share with you guys later this week!

Even though I haven't gone back to work yet, I'm already excited for next weekend! Guys, I've been rocking my natural hair color for a few years, but for the last few months, I've been falling prey to the siren song of darker hair. I loved being blonde as a kid, but when my hair started to darken up as a teenager, I pretty much wanted nothing more than to have brown hair. It's not there yet, so I'm going in to get my hair dyed a couple of shades darker on Friday! I'm pretty pumped about it.

Looking Back at August

September! You're here at last. And with you, fall is just around the corner! As excited as I am to look forward, let's take a look back at August, because guys? It was a great month!

Early in the month, my mom and I took a trip to Carnation to go Blueberry Picking! It ended up being a super wet day, but was a total blast! The trip led to me eating blueberries by the handful, making Blueberry Peach Crisp, and whipping up some Blueberry Limeade!

I celebrated a year of having these two goofballs, Buddy and Hank, living in my house. They're seriously the best and make me smile every day. I'm so glad I have these two little critters!

I put together some fun DIY projects, including my first real stab at jewelry making with a Wire Word Necklace. I also worked on some Painted Cork Coasters, which started out a mess, but ended up pretttttty cute.

Two of the most amazing people I know got married, which led to a reunion of sorts with some of the most amazing women I've ever met. I still get all teary-eyed every time I look at the pictures. It was a weekend SO full of love!

I kept up on my canning with some delicious Salsa Verde and some Pickled Okra...

...And I worked on a project with my amazing cousin over at Imagine Joy, to put together these cute, printable labels for all those canned goods!

I turned 26, and celebrated my birthday with a day at the fair with my family, which was a total blast!

And I once again made it through a month wearing stripes in nearly EVERY outfit post! You can see my love of stripes here, here, and here. Hopefully when fall comes along I'll branch out into plaids, or something. Cool it with the stripes, Becca!

A Day at the Fair!

So many pig puns!

My cute family! Please genetics, let me age as well as my parents have.

For my birthday on Tuesday, my family and I headed to the Evergreen State Fair! I know when you think about the fair, usually you think about rides and ridiculous fried food, but I headed to the fair with two main things in mind: Lumberjack competitions, and pig races. So fun!

In addition to those things, I got giddy checking out all the produce displays, was completely enamored with with the miniature plant displays, and gawked at all the canned goods. 

We all had a great time roaming around, and each found something we were completely fascinated by. My mom kept declaring all of the things she would enter into the fair competitions next year, which was pretty hilarious since most of the things she wanted to enter were made years ago by other people (smocking done by my grandma, a diorama I made in the 5th grade, etc.).

By the time we left the fair we were all super worn out, but not too tired to enjoy a delicious dinner and some birthday cake together!

All in all it was a wonderful day at the fair, and I had a lovely birthday. Thank you to all of you for the sweet birthday wishes!
