Anyways, I don't know about you guys, but as soon as fall starts to roll around, all I want are warm, cozy drinks. Since I live in Seattle, I really don't have to walk more than a few blocks to find a good spot to grab a warm drink, but ya'll, those things are expensive!
While I will probably never muster up the ability or courage to make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home, I can make a mean chai. And guys, it's so easy! And sooooo cheap. And actually really fast, too!
If you are a fan of this dreamy combination of milk, black tea, and warming spices, than you should definitely try this recipe out.
Chai- Makes 2-3 small servings, or 1 very large serving
Ingredients:
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/16-1/8 tsp ground clove
- 1/16-1/8 tsp ground ginger
- 4 whole cardamom pods
- 2 whole star anise pods
- 4-5 grinds of black pepper
- 2 bags black tea (I used decaf because caffeine and I aren't friends)
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tbsp sugar, or to taste
- 1 cup whole milk (you could also totally use a dairy-free alternative here)
1. In a small pot, combine the water, tea bags, and spices. I usually loop the tea bag strings around the handle of the pot. You could also just remove them.
2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and simmer for 7-10 minutes.
3. Add the milk and sugar to the mixture, mix, and return to a boil. Once boiled, remove from heat.
4. Pour through a fine mesh strainer and serve. You can pour (or ladle) and strain directly into the cup(s) like pictured above, or you can strain the mixture into a larger container. Up to you!
5. Add more sugar if you wanna! I always make my chai on the less sweet side and then add sugar as desired. I like to do it that way particularly if I'm serving it to guests so they can customize the sweetness of their chai to their liking!
After you've served it up, really all that's left to do is enjoy it. I like to serve my chai up with a good book or a crossword puzzle for a leisurely morning lounging around the house. You could also throw it in a to-go cup and bring it with you for a nice walk, which would be especially great on a crisp fall day.
So, as you can see, Chai is super easy! I hope you guys try making your own this fall!
Til next time!

I make homemade Chai Tea also!!! It's so good, the Starbucks type is not bad but I always prefer homemade to anything else. Thanks for sharing this recipe ♥
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I love homemade, too. Especially with Chai! You're usually offered sweet or spicy and I always want both!
DeleteI love Chai tea so much! But, I've never made it myself before. Starbucks dirty chai latte is my go-to fall/winter drink. I might just have to try this less expensive alternative! :)

Yessss!!!! Success! I'm glad you like it!
DeleteHomemade chai is my like, favorite favorite favorite thing to make when there's a chill in the air... but I cheat and use pre-mixed chai masala from an Indian grocery store. It's still AMAZING. But maybe if I'm feeling less than lazy I'll do it from scratch one of these days :)

Using a chai mix from and Indian grocery store sounds like a good idea, too! I like doing my own mix since I usually have all the spices on hand anyway.
DeleteAhhh, it looks delicious and I wish I could try it, but I had a bad experience once when I worked at a cafe and one of my coworkers forgot to rinse the soap out of the the steaming pitcher before making my drink :X Now all chai taste like soap to me! I did so love chai! Maybe your homemade kind will remedy my trauma!

Oh my gosh, that's awful!!!! I hope the homemade version helps you get over that bad experience.
Deleteah I love you for posting a recipe for this!! you're right, those drinks really add up. I'll have to try this at home!
ReplyDeleteYay! Thanks, Juni! I hope you like it!
DeleteYum! This looks like the perfect drink for fall, and today is the first day that it's actually felt like fall here in Colorado, so you have excellent timing. =)
ReplyDeleteI love that last picture with the cinnamon sticks and the graham crackers and the book. It's just perfect.

Thank you so much, Laura! That fall weather sounds lovely. It's going to be 85 here today. Ugh.
DeleteIt looks super delicious and perfect for those colder days. I'm so sad that I can't rolerate milk :( Perhaps this will work with soy milk too?

Sofie, you could definitely try this with a dairy-free alternative. I bet almond milk would be especially good!
DeleteOoh, this looks really good. I've never had chai tea before but that combination of flavours is calling my name. I'll definitely be trying this.
ReplyDeleteI love that second picture! X
ReplyDeleteI usually drink coffee in the summer and tea in the autumn and winter. This post came at a good time!
ReplyDeleteMmm, sounds gooood...

I LOVE Chai tea! I was craving warm drinks and scarves and all that good fall stuff--but tomorrow it's supposed to be 90 and humid. Yuck. Looking forward to making this recipe when it cools down again!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! We've had a few cool mornings and evenings lately, but it was literally 90° here yesterday. Ugh.
DeleteYumm, chai tea has always been my favorite! :)

Great recipe I will have to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI don't like tea (shocker because I am English!) but the spices make this sound gorgeous, I might have to try it :) x

so yummy! chai is my favorite tea ever!
ReplyDeleteWant! I love Chai. And I happen to have most of those spices from making pickles (sounds weird, but um... yep! You'd know, you have the same recipe book for pickles)
ReplyDeleteAnd also, it reminds me of some GREAT coffee: have you ever had/made Masala coffee? It's basically coffee boiled in milk with cinnamon, nutmeg, and... something else I can never remember. But it's really good; even my non-coffee-lover mom likes it.

Oh nice! I have the spices on hand from pickling and from my indian food cooking endeavors. My spice shelf is kind of out of control!
DeleteMasala coffee sounds sooooo good! I can't do caffeine, but I may have to try it out with some decaf! Yum!
That chai looks amazing and well worth the extra effort to make it by hand.
ReplyDeletecheers.
I love chai tea! I've always bought the powder mix things, but they're really quite expensive as well. Did not realize it was this simple to make! will def be making this this fall!
ReplyDeleteOh this recipe sounds delicious! I can't wait for chai tea weather. :)
